his is the 38th edition of the UK Pesticide Guide and Brexit still affects the entries listed in this guide because Northern Ireland still has to comply with EU pesticide regulations while Great Britain can make its own decisions. As new actives are approved for GB use, the slower approval process in the EU means that they are often not yet approved for use in Northern Ireland! The difference between GB and NI continues with parallel approvals and with some EAMUs. As the original parallel approval products passed their final use up date in GB some have been replaced with products having different MAPP numbers for GB and NI use respectively. New EAMUs have been added to this edition and note some are only valid in GB while others are approved for use in both GB and NI.

All these differences have been incorporated in this guide so where apparent duplicate entries are listed, one might be for GB use with a different expiry date to the identical product listed for use in Northern Ireland only.

The 2025 edition has one new active ingredient – pydiflumetafen – but there are also new mixtures, formulations and new products. There are new actives in the pipeline and they may gain approval during 2025 when they will be added to the on-line UKPG database. The gains and losses of actives are summarised in the following table with losses clearly out-stripping gains. The new fungicide mixtures perhaps highlight the perceived opportunities in the market with the demise of mancozeb.

To receive monthly updates on new products, approvals and expiry dates email publications@bcpc.org and include “UKPG updates” in the subject line. HRAC (Herbicide Resistance Action Committee) have changed the mode of action codes for herbicides from an alpha-numeric to a numeric code two years ago and in this edition of the book just the new numbers are used. Where a conversion from the old code to the new one is sought, the 2024 edition of this book should help with conversion. The instability in energy prices caused by the turmoil in the Middle East may lead to further increases in product prices so it becomes even more essential to use pesticides in the most efficient way and we hope that the information on this book and database helps with that aim.

Many products have been demoted from Section 2 to Section 3 (Products Also Registered) as their approvals approach the expiry date or are no longer marketed by the companies concerned. As always, this book is a snapshot of the products with a valid approval on 16th October 2024 when the text went for initial typesetting. If you cannot see a product in the main section of the book, please check the index because it may be listed in ‘Products Also Registered’. For those who must have the most up-to-date information I can recommend the on-line version of UKPG which is a searchable database with much more information than we can squeeze into the book.
