This newly-revised edition includes information on 42 new active ingredients, 38 of which have recently received an ISO common name or WHO-INN. The Pesticide Manual now includes data on 856 active ingredients, along with 353 derivatives (esters/salts/isomers) of these pesticides, for a total of 1209 individual compounds.
A continuing goal of The Pesticide Manual is to present data in formats which allow for simple comparisons between active ingredients. Towards this end, in this edition the Environmental Fate section has been completely revamped and updated. New fields have been added that describe the behaviour of the pesticide in the environment (Plant Fate, Soil Fate, Soil Half Life, Soil Absorption Coefficients).
In addition, the Hydrolytic Stability and Aqueous Photolytic Stability fields, previously located in the Physical Chemistry section, have now been moved to Environmental Fate.
Taken together, these data provide a comprehensive overview of how a pesticide may behave in the soil or water and how it may metabolize in plants or degrade in the environment.
Two new fields that describe the behaviour of a pesticide once ingested by animals (typically rats) have also been added to the Environmental Fate section. These include Animal Absorption and Excretion, which details the extent of uptake of the pesticide into bodily tissues, whether it is metabolised and how the pesticide, and/or its metabolites, are excreted, and Animal Metabolism, which describes how the pesticide metabolises.
There have been two additional significant changes to this edition of The Pesticide Manual. First, the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) has developed a separate mode of action classification scheme for nematicides; these are now included in The Pesticide Manual as “IRAC Nematicide”. Second, the EU Approval Expiration Approval date is now included along with the EU Status under the Regulatory section.
Users of The Online Pesticide Manual (bcpc.org/product-category/online-subscriptions) will still find structural codes / identifiers, in the form of InChI, InChI Key and SMILES, for all active ingredients and associated esters, isomers and salts. These identifiers can be used with drawing software in order to generate chemical structures for personal use. The InChI Key can be used directly within a search engine for an internet search for the chemical substance. The searching capabilities of the online version also provide for facile retrieval of data on individual compounds or groups of pesticides. Further, The Online Pesticide Manual includes direct links to company websites, online databases and other useful references and resources as well as full details on the 816 pesticides currently classified as Supplementary.
