Company Profile…20 years of BioGenius serving its customers
“To care about long lasting, effective and protective biocidal products to provide safer lives for peoplearound the world.”
At BioGenius, we work for our global customers: Competent. Testing. Together. For over 700 customers worldwide, these three principles have become more crucial than ever in the approval of active ingredients and products for biocidal and plant protection purposes.
When BioGenius was founded in 2004, the approval of biocidal products was still in its early stages in Europe. Yet, even back then, the BioGenius founders had a clear vision of the challenges that manufacturers and suppliers of biocides would face and the level of service BioGenius would provide.

Armed with this foresight and a small initial customer base, our team grew rapidly. Our strategy focused on establishing ourselves as a provider of “one-stop-shop” laboratory services for all technical studies of biocidal and plant protection products, with an initial emphasis on insecticides and repellents.
Early focus on efficacy testing
Our efficacy testing, including in-house insect breeding, has been a flagship service since our inception, ensuring that BioGenius can conduct tests year-round, independent of seasonal or supply constraints.
Soon, it became clear that our blend of efficacy tests, analytics, and application testing was highly valued by customers, and today, BioGenius remains nearly unique in Europe with this combination of services in analytics and efficacy testing.
Additionally, BioGenius made a strategic decision to GLP-certify our analytics and application testing areas from the start. BioGenius’s early involvement in the EU-wide biocide approval requirements has given us a considerable advantage due to our comprehensive know-how in requirements, methods, active ingredients, and products, especially in insecticide and repellent testing.
Expanding our service portfolio
One of our main challenges from the beginning was the continuous alignment of BioGenius’ service portfolio with the increasing international standards for active ingredient and product approvals.
Approximately ten years ago, this led to an expansion to support additional product types, such as disinfection and hygiene products, preservatives, and rodent control products.
After nearly 20 years of supporting international approval projects, BioGenius now provides services for over half of the 22 biocidal product types required for EU-wide approval packages, serving both European and non-European clients. We also manage projects in vector control (WHO), pest control, and plant protection, which are often required for global approvals.
Key service areas
Our essential analytical services include the development and validation of analysis methods for GC, HPLC, and IC, as well as for GC-MS and LC-MS.
A specialised service is the 5-batch analysis of active ingredients and products, essential for the relocation of production sites and mandatory for assessing the technical equivalence of active ingredients.
In addition, our services include physico-chemical data packages and the short-term and long-term stability of formulations and products, combined with application properties, such as spray characteristics.
For several years, we have offered transport safety data testing, such as metal corrosion, in our laboratories according to international standards like UN C.1, all under GLP conditions if required.
In terms of insect efficacy testing, BioGenius is one of Europe’s leading laboratories, housing more than 26 species of harmful insects, including four mosquito species and three cockroach species, which are available throughout the year. Our diverse test laboratories allow us to assess nearly any insect protection application, covering both domestic and professional pest control needs. Additionally, we conduct vector control tests for international clients, such as malaria prevention.
Our test methods are closely aligned with EU guidelines and international standards, including those from the WHO. BioGenius was also actively involved in establishing approval requirements within the EU BPR framework for repellent testing.
In recent years, the demand for spatial repellent tests has grown significantly among our customers. We test the “spatial repellent effect” in our 30 m³ apartment-like connected rooms, as well as in our standard 20 m³ stainless steel chambers used for simulated-use tests, such as for fogger devices.
Growing role of technical consulting services
In the past 4-5 years, consulting has become increasingly essential for our clients, helping them navigate the testing landscape before beginning initial tests.
Our technical consultations cover:
- Efficacy testing requirements
- Stability parameters
- Necessary analysis methods
- Project costs
- Potential alliances for cooperative opportunities
The detailed guidance documents, which often act as a “hidden agenda,” frequently raise questions among our clients. Our extensive experience enables us to help clients navigate the complexities of the BPR and PPP. With our two decades of biocide expertise, BioGenius holds a globally recognised reputation and can integrate additional areas of expertise through our network – our “one-stop-shop.”
We are proud to serve more than 700 customers in over 50 countries. Our service is regarded as well-structured and reliable by many regulatory authorities.

The BioGenius strategy is to become a provider of “one-stop-shop” laboratory services for all technical studies of biocidal and plant protection products.
Where next for BioGenius?
Each year, we revisit this vital question. In 2020, we set the course for BioGenius’ development, preparing for future challenges. Key steps include a generational change in our laboratory and in our management, as well as investments in modernising our instrumental analytics systems and efficacy testing capabilities.
Since July 2024, BioGenius has been part of the viridiusLAB AG laboratory group, opening new, diverse opportunities for high-quality, comprehensive service to our clients.
Future projects and trends
Our unique combination of efficacy testing laboratories and analytical capabilities is becoming increasingly important for studies on product residues in indoor environments following insecticide application. This type of data is crucial for clients’ risk assessments. Early projects have already begun, and more are planned for 2025.
Our focus on bio-pesticides, initiated in 2022, has already yielded projects, leveraging our viridiusLAB network to meet emerging needs. BioGenius is prepared for the growing responsibilities involved in international biocidal and plant protection product approvals.
