Food crops are destroyed by over 10,000 species of insects and cause an annual loss of about 13.6% globally (Benedict et al. 2003) and 23.3% in India (Dhaliwal et al. 2010). During a pest attack, plants, being immobile, do not have the luxury to move from one place to another, or to even talk with each other. Or so we thought. Communication between plants has always been a mystery; evolution has however, enabled plants to communicate with each other in different ways. Communications between neighboring plants can be explained by two possible mechanisms: above ground communication with the help of volatiles and below ground communication with the help of root exudates. Plants, with the help of volatile organic compounds, have developed an effective means of communication with insects, neighboring plants and pathogens

Plants respond to leaf and root damage by pathogens; directly, by the release of toxic volatile compounds and indirectly, by attracting their natural predators to kill pathogens. The combined effects of both direct and indirect responses forms the plants defense, for instance when danger such as herbivores approache. These volatile compounds can also induce the neighboring plants to prepare for defense against pests (Das et al. 2013). For example, cabbages emit a toxic gas called methyl jasmonate in order to warn other cabbages of predators in the vicinity……..

This is a preview of a full article published in International Pest Control – July/August 2013 issue.

View full article online
The full text of this article is available to subscribers of International Pest Control.

Subscribe for online access
Subscribe to International Pest Control for full online access to all articles in every issue since 2004.

Authors:

Diana Cardoza and Sonia Chadha*
* Nuclear Agriculture and Biotechnology Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay, Mumbai-400085, India.

Insect pests are a major cause of damage to the world’s commercially important agricultural crops.
