It is to be hoped that as the months pass the pipeline of research does not dry up as labs cut back on staffing due to social distancing and travel for fieldwork remains difficult at best and sometimes impossible; there is just so much you can do with Zoom or Teams.

We start off with a story which may one day lead to an article in a biocontrol special. The identification of the genes responsible for reproduction in mildew and a possible route to disrupt this phase in the development of the disease. A report on the use of glyphosate in Europe brings us back to earth: 49,427 tonnes across the EU 28+3, the highest users being Denmark, Poland, Netherlands, Portugal, and France. But the weeds are fighting back and work at Rothamsted Research has shown blackgrass resistance to be linked to the treatment regime – with broader resistance displayed by plants exposed to a range of treatments.

No issue would be complete without drones and this time it’s spotting disease in winter oil seed rape – “Skippy Scout” is the catchy name for the package. In the UK metaldehyde is set to be banned, but wildlife will have to wait until the end of March 2022 for protection – you have to wonder why.

Climate change and Covid in one article is a challenge but not when it comes to the impact on the incomes of farmers who are facing the long term effects of a changing climate and trying to cope with the immediate impact of the pandemic. Syngenta is hoping to help address climate change and loss of biodiversity as well as improve the prospects for sustainable growth post-Covid with its new Good Growth Plan.

Companies continue to evolve and develop with lots of moves, acquisitions, new facilities, and new appointments. In this issue Octavius Hunt gets a mention for its 150th year anniversary which must be some sort of record for our industry. The company profile this month is ZAPI which has been active since 1970, is celebrating 50 years in the industry and hopefully will also be able to celebrate 150 years in 2120.

Our special feature is Biocontrol and IPM with contributions from our Technical Consultants Drs Zia Siddiqi and Partho Dhang. Nelson Lee looks at the use of biocontrol in urban pest management while Marieke Vermeersch from Biotalys considers the control of Botrytis in the field. Finally, Dr Minshad Ansari offers us his view on the future of BioProtection solutions in Europe and how their more rapid deployment is being hampered by the European regulatory system.

In Public Health we take a look at how the skills of the pest control industry can be brought to bear on the control of Covid-19. Digital monitoring also rears its head with two industry giants, Microsoft and Bayer collaborating on monitoring software.

Professor Graham Matthews follows up on the WHO 2020 update of guidelines for personal protection by reviewing the options open to operatives. CABI are after the brown marmorated stink bug with a natural enemy while tomatoes resistant to tomato brown rugose fruit virus are being trialled by Bayer.

Finally, Dr Terry Mabbett takes a look at how to control bacterial canker of cherry. A disease that affects both commercial and ornamental cherries and which can be controlled with copper sprays.

At the back of this issue – as with every issue – is our Calendar of events. If you wanted to see the impact of the pandemic this is a good place to look – even those events rescheduled for next year are now being postponed until 2022. The impact on the venues themselves must be significant..

Chris Endacott, Editor International Pest Control magazine
Email Chris on editor@international-pest-control.com

Contents International Pest Control September/October 2020
Volume 62, Number 5.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

New method to fight grapevine downy mildew.

Glyphosate use in Europe.

When the drugs don’t work.

Spot Phoma early to protect WOSR.

Metaldehyde banned in Great Britain from March 2022.

Covid: making fighting climate change even more vital.

Nootkatone registered by the EPA.

A leap forward for vertical farming?

Phones to help 1.7 million small-scale farmers.

Sand fly research highlighted.

Kenyan farmers are struggling with Covid-19.

COMPANY NEWS

New Owners at Octavius Hunt celebrate 150 year Anniversary.

Corteva Agriscience opens research centre.

STK and Ascenza distribution agreement.

Botanical Solution appoints Marcus Meadows-Smith.

Bayer completes sale of Animal Health unit.

BASF acquires Glu-L Technology.

Andermatt – new subsidiary in Romania.

MFG Chemical relocates to Chattanooga.

AlgaEnergy and Concentric in partnership.

Biobest buys bumblebees.

Biotalys honoured at AgTech Awards.

Syngenta Seeds completes Sensako acquisition.

COMPANY PROFILE

ZAPI: Protecting from environmental parasites since 1970.

SPECIAL FEATURE – Biocontrol and IPM.

IPM then and now: case studies- Zia Siddiqi.
The future of biocontrol and IPM – Jan Mostert.
Biocontrol in urban pest management – Nelson Lee and Chew Yunn Jing.
Need to sustain the practice of IPM – Partho Dhang.
High efficacy in fruit and vegetables field trial program – Marieke Vermeersch.
EU regulation: can biopesticide developers survive?
