In that time, we have made a few changes to improve the presentation and refresh our image. This year we start 2016 with a new front cover and section icons to help navigate your way through the pages. We hope you approve.

The special feature this issue is Pest Management in Crisis. Our technical consultant Graham Matthews provides a review of how the FAO cope with pesticide requirements when faced with sporadic locust outbreaks.

Few of us can forget the scenes of devastation caused by the tsunami that hit the coast of Japan in March, 2011 but few of us will know what has happened since or what struggles there were in tackling pests following the flood. Our thanks to Professor Chow-Yang Lee of the Universiti Sains, Malaysia and his colleagues for providing the detailed account of fly management activities in Japan post tsunami.

Our company profile this month features ICB Pharma from Poland who with a strong pedigree in chemistry are pioneers in formulation technologies and in particular physical control products with applications in several pest management situations.

Improving professionalism is a common goal in many areas of the pest management industry. As the CEPA Certified® scheme for pest control gathers momentum across Europe, Rob Fryatt interviews Simon Forrester of the BPCA who are reporting strong progress in the UK.

Our conference reports include two from the pest control industry with a look back at the end of 2015 with PestWorld in Nashville and Parasitec in Turkey. We also feature the first from this year with the annual gathering of the soft fruit industry in the Netherlands.

In public health, we often take for granted the active ingredients used in insecticide formulations. Fortunately the pesticide companies do not. The article from Bayer provides interesting detail on how the enantiomers of transfluthrin perform against mosquitoes. We also consider developments in the rodent control market with new systems to detect rodent invasions.

In animal health we consider a new vaccine to control cattle ticks and in our plantation and forestry section, Terry looks at how to optimise the application of protectant fungicides in tropical fruit tree crops.

We look forward to another interesting year ahead. Please keep sending in your news and articles.

David Loughlin, Editor International Pest Control Magazine
Email David on editor@international-pest-control.com

Contents of International Pest Control January/February 2016
Volume 58, Number 1

International News in Brief

Association News

National initiative to become annual event.

PPC Live going from strength to strength

Emphasising the importance of high standards in amenity sprayer operations

First CEPA Certified certificates in Greece, the Netherlands, Italy and UK

Facts versus feelings on food safety

ECPA stresses science should underpin, not undermine, innovation

Sustainable use of pesticides: one year delay in report

Interview

Rob Fryatt interviews: Simon Forrester, BPCA: Strong progress in the UK for CEPA Certified®

Company Profile

ICB Pharma: Formulating innovative physical solutions for global pest management

Special Feature – Pest Management in Crisis

Tackling locusts and the FAO procurement of insecticides – Graham Matthews

Area-wide fly management in the tsunami-affected zones of Tohoku region, Japan – Kakuro Kanno et al

Focus on Public Health

PestWorld 2015: Big in Nashville! – Rob Fryatt

Rodenticide stewardship point-of-sale controls announced

Pest controllers meet on the banks of the Bosphorus

Detecting the future of rodent control – J Murray

Separation of ent-transfluthrin from transfluthrin and testing of the biological – activity against Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus – Sebastian Horstmann et al

Focus on Agriculture

Plugging the gap in slug control… and controlling nematodes in root crops

Focus on Horticulture & Amenity

Tackling insect pests in the growing soft fruit market – David Loughlin

Intelligent pest management on your mobile phone

Focus on Forestry & Plantations

Optimising the application of protectant fungicides – Terry Mabbett

Focus on Animal Health

New vaccine has the potential to control cattle ticks

Books and Publications

IPM for the Urban Professional: A Study Guide for the Associate Certified Entomologist – Mike Merchant and Richard Levine.
