Application technology is very important in order to get good coverage

As I write, it is mid-summer and it has for once been a long and memorable, warm and dry period for the UK. An early spring and summer brings with it mixed fortunes; the benefit of early harvests for some, the increase in pest presence for others.

This month we look at the expanding market for biocontrol or biopesticide products. Frustratingly there is no globally accepted terminology for this sector. How do you embrace products as diverse as living predatory or parasitic invertebrates that hunt out their prey; pheromones that do not kill anything but can still provide control; and good fungi, viruses or bacteria that each work with differing degrees of specificity?

Kicking off our biocontrol section, Rob Fryatt interviews David Cary, Executive Director of the IBMA. We then provide insights into how companies working in the biological sector are approaching the market, with contributions from some new and some well established players. LAM International, describe how they are developing a new generation of biopesticides; Marrone Bio Innovation make a case for biologicals to be permanent in IPM programs; Bioconsortia explain how using natural crop traits can be enhanced with microbial teams; Russell IPM present details of their solution to fruit fly species of economic importance; and we conclude with a review of the biopesticide meeting which took place in Greenwich, London in April.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) was once and may still be the biggest selling biological control agent globally, with applications in crop and non-crop. In our focus on public health, we feature an improved formulation for the israeliensis strain of Bt from ICB Pharma, for better vector management. Continuing the Polish theme, Adam Puscinski provides a report from ConExPest: the largest cyclical event of the pest control industry.

In contrast to our review of newly emerging biologicals market, we take a retrospective look at two traditional and long standing products that have yet to be replaced. Jan Suszkiw looks at hydrogen cyanide as a fumigant for control of mill and wood infesting pests and Terry Mabbett considers copper as a fungicide for Sigatoka disease control on banana and in further contrast to all approaches mentioned above, we note how a nonchemical weed control approach is being developed with a tractor-mounted system that uses compressed air to shred small annual weeds.

Finally and to conclude our biocontrol special, we provide a review and details of how to obtain the new 5th edition of the BCPC Manual of Biocontrol Agents.

Have a good autumn.

David Loughlin, Editor International Pest Control magazine
Email David on editor@international-pest-control.com

Contents of International Pest Control July/August 2014
Volume 56 Nunber 4

International Pest News

Behind the scenes of Superwheat: NIAB Open Day

Boosting predatory mite populations

Mysterious fungus is good news only for mosquitoes

New Dengue Vaccine by 2015

Koppert Spain celebrate 20 years

First China Europe Summit a clear success

A team effort between India and Oz is solving the problem of infestations in Indian grain

International news in brief

Association News

Rob Fryatt interviews: David Cary, Executive Director of the International Biocontrol Manufacturers’ Association Association News

CEPA reports on amendments to the Biocidal Products Regulation

The Safe and Sustainable Use Initiative meets for 12th annual Conference

Amenity conference 2014 – an event not to be missed

FAOPMA looks ahead to Hong Kong AGM

PestWorld 2014: Making connections, finding answers and increasing profits

Company Profile

LAM International paradigm shift: developing the next generation of biopesticides

Special Feature: Biopesticides

Biorational solutions to fruit fly species of economic importance – Deborah Chowdhury

Natural crop trait enhancement with microbial teams – Dr. Susan Turner & Holly Meadows-Smith

Understanding the biopesticide industry and market

Biologicals: A stronger case for permanent status in the IPM program – Reid M.
