The BCPC Congress 2019 â âUnderstanding the demands and opportunities of a âGreen Brexitâ â how do we deliver food production alongside environmental enhancement?â
The 2019 BCPC Congress will focus on a wide range of topics relating to how intensification of food production can be reconciled with environmental enhancement. The Congress will seek to unearth the many issues resulting from the UK Governmentâs agricultural policy framework, regardless of the UKâs future relationship with the EU, in which farmers will be paid to deliver biodiversity, cultural landscapes, high quality water, air and soil rather than food.
The science, technology and policy issues relating to the national debate on how to support UK farming and food production whilst meeting the highest environmental and safety standards will be explored in a series of sessions.
Day 1 will start with a plenary session on delivering both improved food production and âpublic goodsâ. This is followed by parallel sessions , a) on current regulatory issues for pesticides and new breeding techniques and b) on science-based agriculture, focusing on advances in applying crop production inputs to achieve future improvements in yields and environmental protection
Day 2 will address key technical and regulatory areas relating to âGreen Brexitâ agricultural and environmental policy. It will cover critical considerations for greatly increased implementation of IPM and the opportunities and regulatory challenges of precision agriculture, which will be the focus for this yearâs CRD (HSE, Chemicals Regulation Division) interactive workshop.
CRD Workshop: âRegulating new agricultural technologiesâ
This yearâs interactive workshop will focus on the fast-growing field of greater precision in crop protection applications, which can improve crop production and reduce the risk of undesired exposures to people and the environment. It will investigate the Regulatory opportunities and challenges arising from developments such as:
- Robotics, machine-learning interfaces, including interactions with operators, âbig dataâ
- Treatments informed in real-time, e.g. by remote sensing, diagnostics, best IPM practice and resistance management guidelines
- Application-specific formulations
- Delivery of âbespokeâ doses for spot-treatment of pests, weeds or diseases
The key aim is to get early inputs from stakeholders to inform/develop regulatory systems in a way that maximises the benefits.

The Biopesticide Summit & Awards 2020 will bring together scientists, researchers, key industry stakeholders, government organizations, investors, policy makers and integrated pest management practitioners to discuss the challenges faced and the future opportunities. The summit will also provide insights from end-use markets giving updates on product performance in different sectors.
There is an urgent need to develop novel products and application technologies to not only âfill the gapsâ in the market due to chemical pesticide removal, but also to combat resistance to currently used pesticides. In addition, there is increasing consumer led retailer demand for growers to reduce the use of chemical pesticides in crop production and to grow fruit and vegetables with reduced detectable residues. Despite significant growth in the biocontrol industry, major limitations with current biopesticide products are still apparent. Register to attend the Biopesticide Summit & Awards 2020 to be part of the solution!
The Summit is the annual meeting of the World BioProtection Forum.

The BCPC Congress 2020
The environment for UK crop production outside the EU â understanding the opportunities
2020 is heralding unprecedented challenges to UK agriculture. We know that Brexit should be âdeliveredâ by the end of this year, but we are only just starting to understand the consequences. Adding to this is the global and national impact of the current coronavirus pandemic.
Whilst the pandemic prevents us from meeting face-to-face, we are delighted to bring to you the same great programme and fantastic speakers virtually over three consecutive mornings.
The programme looks at the environment for UK crop production outside the EU and examines how a country can be independent yet stay interconnected in a global economy and ensure affordable, quality food for its citizens.
Regulators, industry and academia will take an in-depth look at how plant protection product regulation can facilitate agricultural trade, examine the ruptures that can be caused if divergent systems compete in the same geographic space, and identify the opportunities that will emerge for the UK outside of the EU.
The Congress will also feature developments in precision agriculture and sustainability, which could help UK farmers become even more productive in the future while putting yet more effort into managing the environment.
Delegates will still have the opportunity to put questions to the speakers live in Q&A sessions, browse exhibitorâs booths in the Expo, and connect with other delegates via the online Congress chat. Further, presentations will be available to view for 30 days post event.

We look forward to welcoming you to the BCPC Congress 2020!

BPCA launches new digital event PestExtra as PestEx postponed until 2022
British Pest Control Association is launching a brand new digital event following the tough decision to postpone PestEx 2021.
Given the most recent government guidance surrounding events, BPCA has made the difficult but necessary decision to postpone PestEx until 16-17 March 2022.
In its place will be PestExtra – taking place over Tuesday 16, Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 March 2021, itâs the familiar PestEx vibe in an all-digital environment.
“PestExtra is a 3-day conference and tradeshow that brings together thought-leaders and public health pest experts from far and wide. You can access all the usual great pest management content from the comfort of your own home or office”.
BPCA President, Philip Halpin, commented:
âWith the continued uncertainty around the Covid-19 pandemic, local lockdowns and international travel, the decision was made to minimise the risk to visitors, exhibitors and staff within the halls by postponing the event.
âPestExtra is all about getting the pest management sector together – even in difficult times. We want to connect pest professionals from around the world and celebrate the incredible work we do to protect public health.
âWeâre excited to bring you this digital alternative to our flagship trade show, and we hope to see you all there!â
What youâll see
As usual, there will be seminars, product demonstrations, scavenger hunts, CPD trails, competitions, plus a vast virtual trade hall that will keep business owners, technicians and specialists engaged throughout.
Youâll be able to interact and network with the latest pest control technology and services from the worldâs leading suppliers of pest control products and services.
Itâs an opportunity to learn, network and share in a completely digital environment over three action-packed days.
PestExtra will be free to attend for BPCA member companies and UK-based pest management companies (up to 5 free tickets for non-members). Those wishing to attend from outside of the UK will be able to do so for a nominal price (which will still be far cheaper than flights and hotels to London!).
This digital pest management show will be easy to access. View the show in your internet browser or through our dedicated PestExtra app.
With increased direction from the authorities and growing demand for sustainable agriculture it is certain it will continue to experience unprecedented growth. However, there is still uncertainty from within the industry on how to get products effectively into the market. Issues with regulation, testing and registration still prove a major challenge, as well as efficacy and scaling up production.
The inaugural Global Biocontrol Conference 2021 is the premier event for leading experts in the biocontrol industry. This 100% virtual event will be the first of Wisdomâs upcoming agro portfolio, and will bring together producers of biocontrol agents and associations representing them, independent researchers and laboratories, registration and testing service providers, regulatory bodies, biotechnology specialists, consultants, market analysts, distributors of agro-chemical products, growers and academia.
The Conference will address these issues by delivering insightful presentations from leading experts in the biocontrol sector across the world, as well as interactive panel discussions, practical workshops, and excellent networking opportunities.
