With a New Year come new ambitions, new pest situations and new products to tackle them. I hope the arrival of 2014 finds you well and that the twelve months ahead will be successful ones for you personally and your business.

As we start the year in the northern hemisphere the weather has yet again shown its propensity to surprise. Freezing temperatures caused by a polar vortex have shocked North America while winds and rains have hammered countries on the eastern Atlantic coast and left milder temperatures across central and Eastern Europe.

Aside for our normal review of pest control issues across various sectors, in this and each issue this year we will be focusing on one topic in depth. The six special features will include (Mar/Apr) Semiochemicals; (May/Jun) Vertebrate Pests; (Jul/Aug) Biopesticides; (Sept/Oct) Urban Pests and (Nov/Dec) Agricultural Innovation.

If you are working in any of these areas and wish to broadcast your news to a wider audience, please feel free to contact us. We kick start the year with a look at vector control with news and articles on bed nets, aerial larviciding, malaria and malaria vaccines and metarhyzium.

New also for this year is a section devoted to the latest information coming from the various associations involved in pest control, crop protection or pest management. We aim to capture and report back the latest developments in your industry.

Elsewhere we continue with our usual content with a review of two exhibitions that took place at the end of 2013; Parasitec, Morocco and FAOPMA, Korea and one that crept in at the start of 2014, the ISFC (Soft Fruit), Holland.

For growing crops the soil and its health are key to the production of good crops. CleanStart is an integrated portfolio of tools and solutions designed to improve the biological quality of the soil and to assure the establishment of healthy crops developed by Certis Europe. Certis has always been committed to Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles and we take a closer look at this programme which is in line with the Sustainable Use Directive.

Finally we venture into yet more new ground with a look at oil palm nutrition. As the area and intensity of oil palm planting increases, more and more new plantings are made on land previously occupied by oil palm or other plantation monocultures like rubber. This has intensified traditional health problems caused by root and stem base infecting pathogens.

I look forward to 2014 with a renewed enthusiasm. There is much to be excited by in the pest management industry and numerous innovations for us to report back on. We hope you continue to enjoy your reading. Spread the word and if you are at any of the exhibitions listed in our calendar and we happen to be present, let’s have a chat.
